Somatics and Dance:
Historical Overview, Pedagogical Approaches,
and Philosophical Underpinnings 

A Seminar Course

This online seminar course offers a brief historical overview of Somatics and Dance and addresses some of pedagogical approaches that support a somatic-based class. It also addresses philosophical underpinnings and offer students an opportunity to self-reflect on their own philosophy of teaching. The course is delivered on Zoom (6.5 hrs) through a slideshow sharing + discussion (online) together as a group. The course also involves self directed studies.

• Discover how and when somatics trickled into dance.

• Learn about how somatics can be brought into the dance studio in the 21st century to support difference, change, and personal autonomy. 

• How to use pedagogical approaches for teaching somatic-based dance

• Philosophical underpinnings related to somatics

• self-directed studies and assignments that will support you in your practice as a somatic dance practitioner.  

• Dialogue with peers

This is a course geared to dance teachers who are teaching with a somatic approach or who want to teach with a somatic approach.

Online Via Zoom as follows:

Saturday February 22nd 2025:  9:00-11:30am PST - 2.5 hrs

Saturday March 1st 2025:  9:30-11:30am PST - 2 hrs

Saturday March 8th 2025  9:30-11:30am PST - 2 hrs​

Plus: Self-Directed learning/ discussed the first day online.

Participants need to set aside an additional 3.5 hrs (min) for self-directed learning ​

This professional development course is for Dance Teachers, Dance Facilitators and Dance artists who are interested in a somatic approach to dance.​

This class is a preparatory course for the Somatics and Dance Teacher Training Certificate Program however you do not need to be enrolled in the Teacher Training Program to do this online class.
